Dear Masa
Today, I send a letter to Masa. He is a new friend and one that I only know through letters. He wrote to me after reading For the Love of Letters and his generous missives kept coming. He has offered me kindness and support—along with green tea and Mardi Gras beads—from the great state of Louisiana. I’ll explain, after reading Note to Self he discovered that I am an avid green tea drinker, and so he sent me some—tropical green and Earl Grey green from whole foods. The Mardi Gras beads and baubles he sent just for fun.
There are two types of people in this world: 1. Those (like me) who tend to cry (not really) at the sight of something so thoughtful and 2. Those who automatically assumed it (i.e. green tea) must be poisoned. Neither group is wrong or right. The former group risks being taken advantage of and, well, poisoned. And the latter group risks missing out on some genuine human kindness. I think we should all try to walk the middle line.
After being in touch with Masa for almost a year, I can say with certainty that he is a good seed. He is considerate, optimistic, and always looking for ways to make the world a better place. My one regret is that I cannot write to him as often as he writes to me, and I reiterated that in my letter to him. He is one of those people who truly gets as much pleasure out of writing letters as receiving them, and that is as close to selfless as they come.
April is National Card and Letter Writing Month, and I’ve vowed to write one letter each day. Also, please check out the essay contest I’m hosting with Giftin24.com.

Dear Samara,
I’ve tried to join you by writing a letter a day since March 27 (although my powers of communication were sapped by jury duty on Wed and Thu and I now have to catch up!). I hope you are as thrilled as I am at all these excuses to catch up.
I bet all letter writers enjoy the writing as much as the reading. I certainly hope so.

You forgot the third group… the ones who are worried it might be poisoned but are also afraid of missing out on some genuine human kindness so they try the tea out on their friends first to see if it’s all going to turn out okay.
Not that I know anything about that third group. I’ve just read about them on the Internet.
