Let Freedom Ring

I had a very different blog in mind for today, but I can’t stop thinking about Laura Ling and Euna Lee—the two American journalists facing trial in North Korea. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison. 10 years! For being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Laura Ling is the sister of Lisa Ling—former hostess on The View and now a news correspondent for various channels. I’ve seen her on CNN and on Oprah. I grew up with Lisa Ling because she was once a journalist on Channel 1. C1 is a morning news channel that’s broadcast to Jr. High and High School students. Both Lisa Ling and Anderson Cooper were anchors on the show when I was in school. I watched the two of them on Anderson Cooper 360 last night talking about Laura and Euna. It made me nostalgic to see them together again and sad because this is the issue they were discussing.

I prayed for the safe return of both women last night, and this morning I came across a link to sign a petition (on Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter page of all places!). If you have a chance, please sign it. I’m not sure how much good it’ll do. Hopefully some! I feel so helpless—as Lisa, Laura, and Euna do, too, I’m sure. The decision won’t be based on due process or justice, but on the mood of North Korean officials. May there be mercy!
