The Taxpayers Write Back

In response to the Jake DeSantis reisgnation letter published in the New York Times yesterday, a handful of civilians put pen to paper (probably fingers to keyboard) and wrote back.

These letters are well thought out and expressed in a mature manner, as I’m sure they could have been written in the fury that many people are feeling. The Times probably received many angry letters and chose to go with the reasonable ones. Here’s my favorite:

To the Editor:

It should be satisfying that Jake DeSantis is willing to give his A.I.G. bonus to charity so that others far less fortunate than he will receive at least some benefit from the A.I.G. debacle, but his unwarranted self-pity and sense of entitlement truly poison the gesture.

He is not making anyone on self-serving Wall Street look any better with this tirade.

In these economic times we will all be ruined if we view giving as a painful sacrifice. To Mr. DeSantis, Wall Street and conservatives everywhere I offer this paraphrased proverb: There are those who are not pained by giving, nor do they seek joy. They give as naturally as the flowers in the meadow breathe their fragrance into the air.
